PATIENTS RISING NOW STATEMENT:

ICER’S ‘UPDATES’ ARE THINLY VEILED STRATEGY

TO CONTINUE PATIENT DISCRIMINATORY TACTICS

WASHINGTON — Patients Rising Now Executive Director MacKay Jimeson today released the following statement regarding today’s release of an “Updated Value Assessment Framework” by the non-governmental, unregulated and non-appointed Institute for Clinical and Economic Review (ICER):

“Let’s be clear, today’s ‘updated’ ICER Value Assessment Framework should be left in the dark ages.

ICER has laid out its blatant plans to continue to not meaningfully weigh health and economic benefits that are captured outside the health system. Newly-allowed patient input will also not make their assessments disease-specific. Further, ICER has spelled out how they will continue to prejudice toward health system budgets and use discriminatory measures, such as the QALY, despite concerns about its use federally and in state legislatures all over the country.

Most of today’s tweaks are just a PR effort, a thinly-veiled strategy to continue its discriminatory tactics, and ICER has not solved any of its fundamental flaws.

Patients Rising Now will work with its partners on the federal and state levels to continue pushing against these assessments that discriminate against the sickest.”
