Patients Rising Now sent comments to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) for a comment period on Essential Health Benefits (EHBs). As part of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), there were 10 EHBs listed that insurance companies were required to cover. This list includes emergency transportation, prescription drugs, hospital stays, laboratory services, and more. CMS solicited comments on how the policy could be improved and if there were any problems that existed with the policy today. Patients Rising Now’s comments called for the need for more clarifications in definitions at the Federal level, called for transportation to be included as an EHB, and called for the end of the “EHB loophole,” where insurance companies reclassify covered services as non-EHBs so that those services don’t count towards a patient’s annual out-of-pocket maximum Patients Rising Now also took the opportunity to sign on with 50 other patient groups in their comments to CMS. Be sure to read both letters today!
